A Visit to the Mayfield Valley

MAYFIELD ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES CENTRE

This year our Visit to the Mayfield Valley focused on Geography and Art. The children learned how to use a bearing compass at school and then went on the Bower Hill walk where they were required to take bearings of some objects. This year, unlike last year, the weather was fine and visibility was excellent.
The walk also enabled us to discuss contour lines with the children and to follow the contours we were walking up, down and along on their maps as we went along.

On our way to the centre we came across the alpacas at the top of 'Jacob's Ladder' - they were very inquisitive animals and came up close to look at us.

After lunch we walked up 'Jacob's Ladder'. We stopped from time to time on our way up the hill, to sketch the unfolding horizon.

The pencil sketches that they made have been brought back to school and have been used to inform paintings and clay work.

Another place we stopped to do some sketching was the mayfield bog. It is a very atmospheric place and the children's sketches were excellent.
