Microbiology Students visit Y6

Microbiologists come to DPS

This is what Cerys had to say about the visit.
Three students from Sheffield University came into Y6S to teach us all about microbes. We learnt how fast they could reproduce; once every twenty minutes which means there will be 1000000 of them in seven hours! They taught us about good and bad bacteria. Good bacteria can be found in yogurts and some types of milk products. We learnt about Edward Jenner who invented a cure for smallpox. We did an experiment to show that microbes are everywhere. We took swabs with cotton buds in different parts of our classroom. We wiped the buds on a Petri dish and waited a week to see what grew. As you can see in the pictures we got some disgusting looking results. A lot grew in a branched way and we looked at them under a microscope. We were very careful to keep our dishes sealed!
.. and this is what Jack R had to say.
Our class was very lucky to have three lessons taught by microbiologists from Sheffield University. The lessons were really fun. We learnt about microbes and found out that they reproduce every twenty minutes. We had to draw what we thought a microbe looked like and then we were able to use microscopes to view slides of microbes which they had brought in. We took swabs with cotton buds around our room. We took ours from the keyhole of the classroom door. In the last lesson we talked about illnesses and how you could catch them. We looked at our swabs on a Petri dish under a microscope to see how they had grown. It was really fun and all the lessons were brilliant, but beware microbes are everywhere!

"I never knew you could find so many bacteria from under a cupboard!"
