A Visit from the Local History Society

A visit from Dore Historical Society

Our year 6 pupils have been learning about life in Britain since the 1930s. As part of this work they have been studying
 the Second World war.

To help them understand what life was like, we invited

our local history group to come into school to talk to the children about their personal experiences during the war.

The children were put into small groups and each group sat with a member of the history group. The children interviewed the ladies and gentlemen in an informal manner, asking questions and receiving some fascinating and interesting replies.

Many children expressed their enjoyment of the activity and one parent reported that her child " could not get into the house fast enought to tell me about what she had learnt."

The afternoon was clearly a great success with both childen

and adults learning something of each others' lives. One visitor wrote afterwards that she "had learned something from them, as well as imparting my wartime memories."

and that the afternoon had "renewed my faith in the modern youth of today". The children learnt a great deal about life in and around Sheffield during the war.

We are very grateful to all the members of the group who gave up their afternoon to talk to the children.
