Our Wildlife Garden

Saturday dawned somewhat duller and eventually wetter than the glorious day we had seen on Friday. Despite this small setback an intrepid team of workers arrived at school, ready and prepared for the next phase of the garden. This time our helpers were parent volunteers and their children and members of Abbeydale Rotary Club.

We were guided, very expertly, by the Rotary Club, who came prepared with specialist equipment to make    sure the new bog garden was constructed properly.

There were lots of other jobs to do as well. One of the most back breaking was clearing a large overgrown patch that is to become our meadow area. The soil needed to be dug over and weeded.

One group of men carefully thinned out and cleared round the small trees and shrubs we have growing in the garden. As a result we now have trees that will be able to grow strong and healthy. We even discovered a small Yew tree growing in amongst the thicket. This has been removed and replanted. We are hoping it will thrive in its new position.

At the end of the day the wildlife garden was really starting to take shape as you can see from the picture below.

What next? As you can see from the picture below we now have the task of clearing the larger logs and branches to develop what will eventually become a teaching area for outdoor drama, music, storytelling etc..
