Y6 Winter & Christmas Whole School Focus Day

For our whole school focus day activities we decided to take over the KS2 hall for the day.
We planned to put up an 'instant' display on the large back wall that every y6 child could contribute to.
The two pictures you see above are the end result of our day - a winter scene that will form the backdrop for our Christmas celebrations. The scene will be complemented by a huge twinkling Christmas tree.

We made the winter scene by tearing paper - not a pair of scissors, glue or sellotape in sight! Everyone enjoyed doing their bit and we made lots and lots of mess as can be seen

 in the picture below.

Whilst some children were doing their bit for the big display wall everyone else was getting on with their literacy task.
We challenged each child to design and write a short, illustrated Christmas or winter story for our Foundation stage children. Once the stories are written and put into book form the Y6s will be going to the Reception classes to read their stories to the children.
Yes - we did clear up after ourselves.
Some pupils worked together to put up a display in the KS2 entrance foyer. They worked with tissue paper to create wintery tree branches which frame a lovely winter poem. The finished display is at the top of the page.
Our winter poem on the entrance display reads:
Snowfall
Ice - jewelled fir trees in a lonely coppice stand
Frosty heads silhouetted against a whitewashed land.
Branches, bowed by winter's weight, strive to touch the ground.
Across the starlit countryside only silence can be found.
