The Seder Meal

In year four we learn about why Jewish people celebrate the Festival of Passover and enjoy the Seder meal. The Jewish name for this festival is Pesach. The main celebration takes place in the home on Friday evening. The Jewish people remember the suffering of the Hebrew slaves in Egypt and how God guided Moses to lead everyone to freedom in the Promised Land.

We collected many of the key items for the meal and tasted them!

Each of the food items has a symbolic meaning as it represents an aspect of the slaves' lives.

Salt water - slaves' tears
Bitter herbs - hard times as slaves
Lamb bone - lamb sacrificed before slaves fled & smeared blood on doorposts
Charoset - mixture of apples, nut , spices & wine. A reminder of the mortar used for bricks.
Green vegetable - symbol of God's care in the desert & new life in the Promised Land.
Matzot bread - unleaven, there was no chance to let the bread rise as they escaped.
Roast egg - symbol of sacrifice in the temple and new life.
