Year One Activities

Geography
At the start of a new year in Year 1, the children have been thinking about where they went for their holidays and what souvenirs they could bring back with them. They have been looking at maps and atlases to find the places they have visited.

Design Challenge
The children in Y1 were set va challenge to design and make a wheeled vehicle; including cars, buses, tanks, lorries, trains, aeroplanes - and one bike! using junk materials.

Their vehicle had to be able to move when pushed. When they had each made their vehicle they had to test and evaluate it.

This is what some of the children had to say -
"I made an aeroplane out of a box and I found some cardboard for the wings. Under the wings I put some tissue for the engines. When I fastened my wheels on it was hard to get the axles in the right place. When I push it gently it goes along really fast. I like making models"

. "I made a train out of a box. First I drew a design and my train looks just like it. I found a cardboard tube for the funnel. It was hard to put the straws through the axels, but I did and then I put some wheels on. It goes really fast and I only need to give it a little push. It's fun making models.

A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS AT WHIRLOW FARM

The Y1s made a visit to Whirlow Farm for their Victorian Christmas.
We dressed in Victorian costumes and did lots of interesting things. See them pictured at the top of the page.

Pandora the horse is the oldest animal on the farm. She is 29 years old. Jack really enjoyed petting him.

We visited the pigs in the 'Pig Palace'. Pictured left are Andrew and Kavi

We were able to stir the Christmas pudding and make a wish. I wonder what Jacob wished for.

Y1J VISIT TO BISHOPS HOUSE

As part of their work on 'Houses and Homes' our class visited Bishops House.

They had the opportunity act out the story of St George and the Dragon. Don't you think that Chloe makes a great dragon!

The children also dressed up as rich people from Tudor times.
Abi, Jak and Steph really enjoyed this activity - very convincing as wealthy tudors.

Another activity the children all enjoyed was writing with a quill pen. Quite tricky!
